  1. I didn’t know this was a thing until now, but I do enjoy following along your hiking adventures on Instagram. Love that there’s an initiative at Caprock Canyons State Park for picking up trash. Would be great if more people participated in that, but of course even better if people stopped leaving trash behind in the first place. Good to see that most of the hikes are for everyone as I don’t own a pair of hiking boots just yet. Would love to experience this someday and meet other hikers!

  2. I had never heard of First Day Hikes before but what a great idea! I want to look up what kind of activities they have planned for the new year in our neck of the woods (Virginia). I love that it is more than just hiking, but also yoga, horseback riding, polar plunges, and more. A great way to start the new year!

  3. I think that the First Day Hikes is a great idea to get people out for New Years Day. But I had not heard about this before. Especially good to get people to visit the state parks. They often offer such fascinating variety. It is great that there are so many Texas State Parks. There are certainly several that sound interesting for us. Although I won’t be doing a polar bear plunge!

    1. What’s better way to get people to go outside, right? Some people take it as a challenge because it’s not easy to leave home on the first day of the New Year.

  4. I like the idea of First Day Hikes. It seems perfect for me, as I love hiking. I haven’t heard about it before, so it’s fantastic you are your experience. I’m going to visit Texas, so I add Texas State Parks First Day Hikes to my list. It’s impressive that 5,000 people participated in it in 76 parks. I like the diversity of programs.

  5. Wow, this is the first time I heard of First Day hikes. Such a cool concept! I would be too scared to go hiking alone for fear of getting lost, it would be great to have other people around especially an experienced guide. Thank you for sharing this info. The ones with polar plunge sound interesting.

    1. The park has seen more and more people joined the event every year. So, you will never be alone doing this First Day Hikes.

  6. I did not know the First Day Hikes Program existed, but now that I do I can’t think of a better way to bring in the new year! What a cool tradition to start, and to start the beginning of the year focusing on the Earth and natural beauty. Love this idea!

  7. Sounds like a fantastic idea to encourage people to be more active and spend time outdoors, even with families. I wish we had so many national parks and hiking opportunities where I live! I would love to visit the Texas state parks some day, its good to know that there are so many hiking options, depending on the level of fitness and appetite for adventure!
