A New England road trip had been on my travel wish list for years. One summer, my family finally made it happen, and it quickly became one of our most memorable road trips.

With only 12 days, I spent hours researching and mapping routes before finally settling on an itinerary that balanced nature, famous landmarks, and spontaneous roadside stops.

Why start in Vermont? Because we were driving from Texas and entered New England through Vermont after crossing Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, and New York.

Day-by-Day New England Road Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Explore Montpelier, Vermont
Our New England road trip itinerary begins in Vermont’s charming capital, Montpelier.
Montpelier is actually the smallest capital city in the United States, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm. Historic buildings, small cafés, and tree-lined streets make it a lovely place for a relaxed evening stroll.
We visited after dinner and stopped for a creemee in nearby Williamstown.
A creemee is Vermont’s version of soft-serve ice cream and is something you absolutely must try when visiting the state.

Day 2: Maple Farms, Stowe & Covered Bridges
Start your day with one of Vermont’s most iconic experiences — visiting a maple sugar farm.
Morning Stop
Morse Farm Maple Sugarworks
Montpelier, Vermont
After learning about maple syrup production, head north to Waterbury.
Highlights include:
- Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour
- Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Graveyard
- Cold Hollow Cider Mill for famous apple cider donuts
From Waterbury, continue to Stowe, one of Vermont’s most beautiful mountain towns.
Things to do in Stowe:
- Visit charming Stowe Village
- Hike to Moss Glen Falls
- Drive Smugglers Notch Pass
On the return drive toward Williamstown, visit:
- Brookfield Floating Bridge
- Northfield Covered Bridges
📦 Travel Tip: Covered bridges are a classic New England sight. Stop at visitor centers or local campgrounds for brochures — locals often know the best hidden bridges nearby.
Day 3: Franconia Notch & Lincoln, New Hampshire
Today, you enter the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Lincoln is one of the best base towns for exploring the region.
Stops along the way include:
- Iron Furnace in Franconia
- Lupine fields in Sugar Hill (spectacular in June)
Once in Franconia Notch State Park, don’t miss:
- Cannon Mountain
- Echo Lake
- Old Man of the Mountain Memorial
- Profile Lake
- Boise Rock
- The Basin
After exploring the park, check into your accommodation in Lincoln.

Day 4: Flume Gorge & Kancamagus Highway
This is one of the most scenic days of the trip.
Start with a visit to Flume Gorge, a stunning natural granite gorge with waterfalls and boardwalk trails.
Hiking the Flume Gorge in New Hampshire was easily one of our favorite hikes in New England. It’s only a 2-mile loop.
Next, drive the famous Kancamagus Highway.
This 34-mile scenic byway is considered one of the best fall foliage drives in the world.
Stop at:
- Sabbaday Falls
- Scenic overlooks along the highway
Continue to Mount Washington Auto Road, where you can drive to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast.
📦 Travel Tip: Mount Washington has some of the most extreme weather in the U.S. Even in summer, bring a jacket if you plan to visit the summit.
Day 5: Drive to Acadia National Park, Maine
Today is the longest driving day of the itinerary.
Drive through small New England towns before reaching the Maine coast.
Interesting stops along the way include:
- Paul Bunyan and Babe statues in Rumford
- Scenic towns along US-2
By afternoon, arrive near Acadia National Park.
Visit the Jordan Pond area for a relaxing walk around the lake.

Day 6: Acadia National Park Road Trip Stops
Start early and drive to Cadillac Mountain Summit.
At certain times of the year, this is the first place in the U.S. to see sunrise.
Then drive the Park Loop Road, stopping at:
- Sand Beach
- Thunder Hole
- Otter Cliff
- Sieur de Monts
Later, explore the quieter western side of Mount Desert Island.
Stops include:
- Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse
- Wonderland Trail
- Seawall
- Southwest Harbor
End the day exploring Bar Harbor.
Day 7: Schoodic Peninsula & Eastern Maine
Schoodic Peninsula is the only mainland section of Acadia National Park, and far fewer visitors make the trip here.
It turned out to be one of our favorite places during our Acadia National Park road trip.
Watching waves crash against the granite coastline at Schoodic Point was unforgettable.
Later, continue north to Lubec, the easternmost town in the United States.
Highlights include:
- West Quoddy Head Lighthouse
- Views of Canada across the water
Day 8: Maine Coastal Drive to New Hampshire
Drive south along US-1, one of the most scenic coastal routes in Maine. (I’ll be back for a special New England coastal road trip.)
Stops include:
- Fort Knox Historic Site
- Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory
If you have time, stop in Wiscasset for a lobster roll at Red’s Eats.
Later visit:
- Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth
- Nubble Lighthouse in York
These are two of the must-see Maine lighthouses for first-time visitors.
Stay overnight in coastal New Hampshire.

Day 9: Salem & Cape Ann Coastal Drive
Start the day exploring historic Salem, famous for its witch trial history and beautiful colonial homes.
In the afternoon, take a scenic drive around Cape Ann.
Stops include:
- Manchester-by-the-Sea
- Gloucester Harbor
- Rockport
Don’t miss Motif No. 1, known as the most painted fish shack in the world.
Day 10: Boston
Spend the day exploring one of America’s most historic cities.
Must-see attractions include:
- Freedom Trail
- Boston Common
- Faneuil Hall Marketplace
- USS Constitution
And of course — don’t leave Boston without trying a cannoli from Mike’s Pastry.
Day 11: Providence & Newport, Rhode Island
Today you visit the smallest state in New England.
Start in Providence, the state capital.
Then continue to Newport, famous for its coastal mansions and ocean views.
Highlights include:
- Newport Cliff Walk
- Oceanfront views of historic mansions
- Rhode Island clam chowder

Day 12: Mystic & Hartford, Connecticut
End your New England road trip itinerary in Connecticut.
Start the day in charming Mystic.
Things to do:
- Walk around downtown Mystic
- Watch the Mystic River Bascule Bridge
- Visit Olde Mistick Village
- Try pizza from the famous Mystic Pizza
Then drive to Groton to visit the USS Nautilus submarine museum.
Finish the trip in Hartford, where you can visit:
- Connecticut State Capitol
- Mark Twain House & Museum

This is one area of the U.S. I haven’t explored yet, but would love to. I, of course, want to visit Acadia National Park, but I also love your other tips too. Plume Gorge looks especially beautiful and nice that it is only 2 miles.

I’m wondering what’s more gorgeous: the New England locations or the dog?
I have been thining about doing a roundtrip and this sounds perfect, especialy because i am in ny. I like the idea of doing this in the fall and seeing the leaves change colors while eating some maine lobster!
This road trip would be fun in Summer or Spring, but epic in the Fall season. Would love to see all the nature with the fall foliage.
We love to do road trips and discover new places. New England offers so many great stops along the way. And pretty easy to do 6 states in 12 days. Your road trip itinerary would add 2 new states for us – Connecticut and Rhode Island. The outdoor spots would be a big draw for us too.
