10 Epic Outdoor Fun And Free Things To Do In Fort Worth, Texas.
What are the best outdoor things to do in Fort Worth that are fun and free?
It was a frequent question I heard from my friends. Most of the times, it popped up when they had to entertain out-of-town visitors.

When my husband and son are at school, I like to go around the city with my dog. We are searching for outdoor activities in Fort Worth that are fun and free for the whole family, including for the four-legged baby.
Weekends are exploration times with family. Sometimes we made a day trip from Fort Worth to towns around Dallas Fort Worth for a change of scenery.
After actively finding and doing different activities around the city with my family, I came up with the best fun and free things to do in Fort Worth that you must put on your activity calendar.
Outdoor Fun And Free Things To Do In Fort Worth
1. Walking, hiking, or biking the Trinity River Trails
Over 100 miles of hiking trails connect the city of Fort Worth and its suburbs.
Like a spiderweb, it intertwines the neighborhoods to the business districts, shopping, and parks.
Maybe you have done part of the trails, but I encourage you to wander more.
Ride your bike. Explore by foot or from the back of your horse.
Your dog will enjoy the trails, too.
Don’t forget to snap a picture of the trails at the trailhead so you know where you are going.
Don’t just walk, though! Look for intriguing things along the trails, like the Trinity Trails mural gallery, birds, plants, and more.
You can also do geocache while walking on the trails.
When my husband and son are at school, I like to walk the trails with my dog. We started from different trailheads in the suburbs and walked towards the city. Usually, we didn’t see too many people on the trails.
One day, we found an interesting spot that led us to the following activities.
2. Chasing waterfalls in Fort Worth
Yes! Waterfalls! Fort Worth may be flat, but it doesn’t mean you can’t find waterfalls here.
The catch is to chase them after a lot of rain. Of course, don’t expect to see tall waterfalls like in Colorado Bend State Park or the one in Wichita Falls. A few feet tall waterfalls are enough to make us happy. 😉
Airfield Falls in Westworth Village is Tarrant County’s biggest natural waterfall.
Go to Sansom Park for another waterfall, and don’t forget Fort Worth Water Gardens.
Another best chance to see waterfalls are along the Trinity Trails.
Unfortunately, I prefer not to mention the location here. I don’t think people who live in the neighborhood will like to see a lot of strangers in their backyards.
Check the Trinity River Trails map and look for a water fountain sign. After all, you are chasing waterfalls!
– Airfield Falls Trailhead & Conservation Park
200 Pumphrey Dr., Westworth Village.
– Marion Sansom Park
2501 Roberts Cut Off Road.
– Fort Worth Water Gardens
1502 Commerce St.
3. Posing with statues and sculptures
You might not realize how many statues and sculptures spread across Sundance Square and Stockyards.
If you are looking for things to do in Fort Worth this weekend, Saturday and Sunday are the best times to find them. Less traffic and parking is free.
My preferred time is early Saturday morning when most people are still at home in their PJs.
Here are some of my favorite statues and sculptures to pose with:
– The Fort Worth Five Photograph
John Swartz took a picture of Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid, and three of their “Wild Bunch” gang members on November 21, 1900.
Franco Alessandrini transformed the most famous Old West photo into a life-size bronze sculpture.
He designed it so that visitors can pose in the outlaws’ laps.
Address: 1006 Houston St.
– John F. Kennedy Sculpture and Exhibit
In November 1963, the President spent a night in Fort Worth before heading to Dallas the next day.
He spoke in front of the Chamber of Commerce and thousands of people who waited outside the Hotel Texas (now Fort Worth Hilton.)
Texas artist Lawrence Ludke created the eight-foot statue.
Address: 916 Main St.
– Man with a Briefcase
This 50-foot tall guy is towering above Burnett Park, created by Jonathan Borofsky.
He became a landmark at the western entrance to downtown Fort Worth.
Address: 501 W 7th St.
– Statue of Bill Pickett
Bill Picket was the most famous African-American cowboy who invented the technique of bulldogging.
Lisa Perry created this gritty bronze artwork that you can see in the Stockyards.
Address: E Exchange Ave.
4. Hunting for murals
As one of the leading cultural districts in the nation, Fort Worth jumped to decorate the walls around the city. From people to animals to famous quotes and designs, they are there for you to be discovered.
Get in your car, ride your bike, or walk around the alley or parking garage to find them.
Most murals are at The Foundry District, Foch Street, WestBend, Near Southside, and Sundance Square.
Here’s one of my favorites.
5. Paddling the Trinity River
Bring your kayak and launch it at one of the eight launch sites along the Trinity River.
You can paddle from 1.5 to 14 miles, depending on your energy for the day.
Also, you can paddle your SUP here.
Remember to check the water levels before you go on a paddle trip, and always wear your lifejackets.
6. Doing the Downtown Fort Worth Free Walking Tours

10. Watch the cattle drive at the Fort Worth Stockyards
The Fort Worth Herd is the world’s only twice-daily longhorn cattle drive. You can watch it at 11.30 a.m. or 4 p.m.
Note that no drives on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
The Fort Worth Herd Trail Boss determines drive cancelations due to inclement weather and necessary onsite changes.
I have watched it many times, and I still enjoy watching it.
There you go! Enjoy this outdoor fun and free things to do in Fort Worth! Let me know which one/s that you like to do, or want to do.
I am all about staying outdoors these days, so I really appreciate all the outdoor options! Looks like there is a ton to do in Fort Worth!
I love chasing waterfalls and I agree, they don’t need to be huge to be beautiful. Even small, bumbling waterfalls are just as gorgeous and mesmerising. I like the idea of wandering around and see what murals and paintings you can spot around town. A bit of a treasure hunt!
Your dog is a natural when it comes to photos. I’m sure he/she enjoys the walks and loves chasing waterfalls too!
Haha… he does like pose for pictures, although sometimes he can get bored. And yes, he really enjoys the walk with us.
This definitely looks like a fun city to visit. Chasing waterfalls, public art and biking Trinity River Trail all sounds great to me! It’s great when visiting cities on holiday to know there’s lots to do for free, as sometimes that can deter visitors from enjoying and seeing the city. But not here!
Who doesn’t like free and fun things to do in a city, right?
I would have never imagined waterfalls in Fort Worth, so that was a nice surprise. I love how your pup gets to enjoy many of these activities with you like posing with statues. So cute!
I always look for free things to do in every destination, so I absolutely love this guide. I am saving it for future trips 🙂
The free walking tour in Fort Worth is what I would love to start my trip with. And then course chasing the waterfalls. It looks beautiful. Murals are my favorite too as I love the ideas which go behind creating them. And clicking pics with statues who wouldn’t love to flash across on social media. Lovely place all together.
Wow! I did not really nice there is so many thngs to do in Forth Worth. The best part its free!
I would love to see those murals. They’re so nice and instagrammable. Would love to visit soon.
This is what it’s all about. Fun and free things that are outdoorsy. There are other fun things but not free.
This is perfect! I’ll be driving through Fort Worth this summer!
That’s great!
There are wonderful things to do in Fort Worth. Being a nature lover, I would love to take a walk along Trinity River Trails. Also chasing waterfalls is also a wonderful thing to do here. Posing with sculptures would be fun thing to do here. I am mural lover, so would try to hunt as many as possible.
I love posing with statues so I will keep that in mind if I get to Fort Worth.
You make Fort Worth look like a very appealing destination, Umiko. I had no idea Taxas is so beautiful in some parts. I have only been in Houston so far and I wasn’t very impressed, but Airfield Falls in Westworth Village is absolutely amazing. I’d love to visit some of these attractions someday.
Fort Worth is a laidback city, in my opinion. It has its own things. I never get bored strolling around Sundance Square on Saturday mornings or visiting the Stockyards. There’s always something new to be found, especially along the Trinity River Trails.
I’ve only ever been to Fort Worth for work, but I loved having time to explore. Now I can’t wait to go back and explore further! (I love waterfalls!)
Wow there are so many great things to do here that are free! I would love to take a look at the waterfall!
What a timely post! We were thinking about heading to Fort Worth or Dallas for a weekend just for a change of scenery! Definitely love the focus on outdoors and free!
I have been to Fort Worth many years ago and remember visiting the stockyards and watching the Long Horns cattle drive through the streets! That was quite unusual for me. It is great to know that the city has more interesting places to visit especially the waterfalls and paddling in the river. I really like that bronzework picture of the African-American cowboy who invented the technique of bulldogging. Interesting! 🙂
The cattle drive is still fun to watch. And the bronze cowboy statue is actually located in the Stockyards. I believe you walked through it and even took picture by it.
Fun and free are great criteria for finding things to do. Especially these days if it means outdoor entertainment. Good to know there are lots of options in Fort Worth. I would definitely head out for the waterfalls. And a kayak on the Trinity River sounds like a peaceful outing.
You are right. These are activities that people look for lately. Fun, free, and outdoor.
I am planning a trip to Dallas/Fort Worth area and this is great information. I would love to check out the Trinity Trails mural gallery and take a selfie with the The Fort Worth Five. Enjoying my morning coffee by the Airfield Falls sounds like the perfect way to start a day of sightseeing. Thanks for the suggestions
Great! Let me know when you are here. Maybe we can set a meet up.
I often find myself asking the same exact question! This is a great list for when the weather is beautiful and you don’t have anything scheduled on the calendar. Especially the waterfall!
Chasing waterfalls is definitely my thing to do. I love visiting waterfalls. I would also love the walks around the River and explore Fort Worth. I had never heard of Fort Worth before and now I definitely want to visit is as soon as I can. Its beautiful.
