Pick Your Own Fredericksburg Peaches at Jenschke Orchards

Fredericksburg peaches as well as Stonewall peaches are the main part of summertime in the Texas Hill Country. You can find farmers and growers selling baskets of this sweet fruit along Highway 290 between Fredericksburg and Stonewall, and along Highway 87, south of Main Street in Fredericksburg.

But that’s not it. You can also pick your own Fredericksburg peaches. One of the bucket list of things to do in Fredericksburg that I finally did last summer.

Where to pick Fredericksburg peaches?

Gillespie County – where Fredericksburg and Stonewall are located – is one of the largest peach-producing counties in Texas with some 600 acres of trees.

Currently, the Fredericksburg area only has one pick-your-own orchard in the area. Jenschke Orchards offers pick-your-own peaches at select times of the season. It is primarily a “Pick Your Own” orchard, growing peaches since 1961.

Address: 8301 East US Hwy 290, Fredericksburg, TX 78624. Ph.: (830)-997-8422.

When are Fredericksburg peaches in season?

Normally it’s between May and September. But I suggest you check Jenschke Orchards website regularly prior to the pick season.

According to their website, they grow over 30 varieties of peaches, classified in 3 groups: clingstone, semi-freestone, and freestone. The classifications refer to the way the fruit’s flesh clings to the pit.

Their clingstone peaches whose flesh clings to the pit generally ripen in May. Semi-freestone where fruit will separate from pit ripens in June. And freestone peaches where fruit having a pit in which the flesh does not cling usually ripen in June and July.

Picking peaches at Jenschke Orchards

To make sure you get a slot, reserve a spot online. My friends and I got spots at 11.30 am. Not our first choice since July in Fredericksburg can be really hot.

We gathered in the Jenschke Orchards Country Store and got a wrist band after we paid the pick-your-own peach fee. You can pay it cash or with a card. A lady gave us a short brief about pick-your-own peaches, like to pick the dark color peaches, where can we pick peaches, etc.

Then the lady handed us a box for the peaches as we walked towards the back. No restroom in the farm, so you better use the restroom before you leave.

Outside, a trailer was waiting for us. A guy on a tractor pulled the trailer to the orchard which was right behind the country store. He stopped at the location where we could pick the peaches for half an hour. We were assigned two rows of peach trees with fruits growing abundantly.

So we began picking the peaches. I tried to pick the largest ones, but our son sometimes just picked the dark colored ones, it didn’t matter the size. It was a fun experience although it was really hot the day we were there. The peaches were still firm, they were not ready to be eaten right away.

Approximately half an hour later, the guy arrived to take us back to the Country Store.

At the store we took our peaches to the register to be weighed. Then we paid the peaches based on it.

We didn’t pick a lot of peaches like a couple from Austin we met there. They had two boxes full of peaches and apparently they came every summer to Jenschke Orchards to pick their own peaches. No wonder they got big ones as they are professional pickers. Hehe..

They told us to put the peaches in a brown paper bag, loosely roll the top closed, and leave at room temperature on a counter for a few days. Then we could use it to make jams, peach cobbler, or just simply eat it.

Before leaving the farm, we enjoyed Jenschke Orchard’s delicious homemade peaches ice cream.

Are dogs allowed in Jenschke Orchards?

Yes, they are, but they can’t go into the store and ride in the trailer. Also, they must be on leash at all times.

Our dog Snoopy was with us. His boy walked him behind the trailer to the spot where we picked our peaches. Then he walked with us in the orchard.

If you plan to take your dog with you, don’t forget to bring water for him/her. It can be really hot out in the orchard.

What other fruits does Jenschke Orchards have?

Beside peaches, Jenschke Orchards also have strawberries, blackberries, pumpkins, and Christmas trees that you can pick yourself.

Here is the harvest dates for these fruits/trees:

– strawberries: February to May

– blackberries: May to June

– pumpkins: September to October

– Christmas trees: November to December

Every fall they also offer corn mazes for visitors. There’s an admission that includes a giant corn maze, corn hole, Texas size jumpy pillow, the corn box, wagon ride, and cowboy roping. Sounds like a fun season.
