A Short Hike to Moss Glen Falls in Stowe, Vermont.

Waterfall chasers, here’s another falls to visit while in Vermont: Moss Glen Falls in Stowe. One of the most picturesque waterfalls in Vermont, New England.

Last summer we stopped at downtown Stowe during our three days visit in Vermont. I asked a lady in the visitor center about waterfalls near Stowe. She suggested to me Moss Glen Falls as we didn’t have much time to spend in town. She did mention that it didn’t look as beautiful as it used to because they didn’t get a lot of rain.

With a map and information in hand, we headed to Moss Glen Falls after a stroll in town.

Direction to Moss Glen Falls in Stowe

Moss Glen Falls is located in the east of Stowe Village. It takes only around 7 minutes to drive a 3.9 miles distance to get to the trailhead.

There was road construction during our visit. Probably you will get there faster on normal days.

From downtown head east on Vermont Rte 100 N toward Slab Alley for 3 miles. Slight right onto Randolph Rd. for about .4 mile, then turn right onto Moss Glen Falls Rd. After driving .5 mile you will arrive at the Moss Glen Falls trailhead on the left. You will see a small parking area by the trailhead.

Hike to Moss Glen Falls

In order to see the falls you must do a little hike. It’s only .3 of a mile one way and will take approximately 20 minutes to do.

You will walk on a dirt trail that turns to a wooden platform above the muddy area. This part is not shaded. Then you will follow the brook upstream to the falls. This is under tall trees.

Still under tall trees, the trail will turn into a short steep incline to the falls overlook on the left. To the right is where you can go to the base of the falls.

At the overlook you will see ropes spanning from one tree to the other tree. There’s a sign that says “End of Established Trail.” The ropes are there for the visitors’ safety so they won’t walk towards the cliff to see the falls closer. It’s dangerous!

But, when you walk further to the left, you can step over the rope. That’s for people who want to do the full hike, up to 4.2 miles, about 2-3 hours hike.

My son and I and our dog Snoopy stepped over the rope. We didn’t do the full hike, we just wanted to see the falls from a higher elevation. So, we hiked a few yards higher. I say that the falls view was way prettier from the overlook. Too many trees blocking the view of the falls from here.

If you want to check out a few yards more like we did, the trail is covered with tree roots and a bit slippery from previous rain when we were there. You must be extra careful. Definitely you need a pair of hiking shoes or at least your walking shoes have good traction.

Back to the bottom, I tried to go to the base of the falls but I didn’t make it. I found the rocks were too slippery. We still had to go to New Hampshire, Maine, and the rest of the New England’s states. I tried to avoid accidents during the trip.

On the way back I noticed nature’s art built by beavers in the brook.

Is Moss Glen Falls for Everyone?

As long as you are fit, the answer is yes. There’s an elderly guy hiking with his two adult children ahead of us. He looked healthy and fit for his age, but he didn’t go to the overlook like he used to. (I overheard them talking.)

On our way down from the falls overlook, we saw a family with young children go up the incline. They looked fine and enjoyed the trail.

Ultimately, you’re the one who knows your capability.

Is Moss Glen Falls dog-friendly?

Yes it is! We hiked with our dog Snoopy and he enjoyed the hike. Snoopy is a medium size dog, and he didn’t find any problem on trails, including when we stepped over the ropes.

Can you swim at Moss Glen Falls Vermont?

Unfortunately the falls is not a swimming spot. Make sure to be safe around any slippery rocks.

Is a trip to Moss Glen Falls in Stowe worth it?

Absolutely! Moss Glen Falls may not be the highest waterfall in Vermont, but it surely looks picturesque cascading 125 feet.

The trail is short, perfect for when you only have a quick visit in Stowe.

Also, make sure to bring enough water for everyone in the group. Don’t underestimate the distance!
