When you drive on US-281 or US-183 through Lampasas Texas, don’t forget to stop at Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden. This outdoor art installations will make you awe as Lampasas is just a small town with population less than 7,000.

Where is Lampasas?

Lampasas is a small town on the northeastern edge of the Texas Hill Country. Used to be home to seven mineral springs, Lampasas was a popular tourists destination back in the late 19th century.

The town is only 6.2 square miles, but it doesn’t mean they have nothing to make you stop in town. Besides Hancock Park, the site of the famous Hancock Pool, the only remaining sulphur spring swimming hole in the state, Lampasas also has a few other city parks, home of a few wineries, a museum, and one of the oldest courthouses in Texas that is still in use. Colorado Bend State Park with its famous Gorman Falls is just a short drive west of town. And of course, the Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden.

Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden

While waiting for my son spending time with his dentist, one thing I liked to do was searching through Texas Monthly Magazine to find places of interests around Texas that worth a visit. One time I found Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden in Lampasas. As we were going to Longhorn Cavern in Burnet and we would drive through Lampasas on one Labor Day, it made a perfect stop.

My mistake was I didn’t write down the address. I believed our GPS would take us there. Wrong! No Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden showed up in our GPS, not even Hanna Springs Park or Hanna Springs Garden. Luckily the car was thirsty and my husband got to ask a guy at the pump station about the garden. Double lucky, the guy knew about it and showed us the direction.

Well, no wonder it’s not showed up in our GPS. Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden is in Campbell Park. It’s not the name of the park. Hah! It is located about half a mile from the main road.

The sculptures in the park divided into two groups: permanent collections and rotating collections. The rotating collections are for sale and moved out after a year if they have not been purchased. LAFTA (Lampasas Associations for the Arts) hosts the Art in the Park Event every year, where they let artists to put their art pieces in a park for a year to sale. Of course, after LAFTA curated the pieces.

The Sculpture Collections

It was hot, the temperature was 93˚F, and the sun shone brightly when we got to the park. But we’re not the only family roaming the park, moving from one sculpture to another sculpture.

Each of the sculptures has a small board that has info about the sculpture, such as the title, the artist, and materials used. Last I heard, the city has paved a nice pathway throughout the park. It makes the park a nice place for a stroll as well.

Below are the permanent collections and rotating collections of the sculptures. Since we visited Lampasas in 2017, I believe the rotating collections are different from what you will see today. I remember seeing the weird looking frog with wings (the last picture) in Boerne’s library, when we went to Boerne for a weekend.

Local artist Nancy Gray originated the idea of the sculpture garden and was involved in its early development. LAFTA promotes and operates the garden while the city owns the park. And all artists are from Texas.
