Christmas is my favorite holiday of the year, and the Granbury Living Christmas Cards makes the holiday even merrier.
Picture yourself holding a Christmas card and suddenly it becomes alive when a group of people play and sing the scene right in front of you. Or, the famous Christmas story from two thousand years ago is happening right before your eyes. Isn’t that wonderful?
These are the things you will find at the Granbury Living Christmas Cards. We got to see it several years ago, and later I found out that this occasion only takes place every even year.
Since last year performance was canceled because of Covid, the Lakeside Baptist Church will bring it back to you this year. So, this year is another opportunity for you to see this outdoor interactive family event on the historic town square in Granbury, Texas.
GRANBURY LIVING CHRISTMAS CARDS: Where Christmas Magic Starts
The Granbury Living Christmas Cards festivities last all day long, but the magic happens on the evening, starting at 6.30 when the cards come to life. There are 8 cards play on stage situated around the town square. Each of them plays at the same time and duration with 8 minutes interval (if I’m not mistaken) to allow visitors to rotate to another stage.
During the day children can color, make holiday crafts and decorate a Granbury Living Christmas Card at the Kids Imagination Center. This is also when you can view details of the Christmas cards. These cards hand-painted by nationally renowned artist James Spulock, and each depicts a different scene from Christmas.
Here are some of the cards when we saw them come to life from several years ago:
Taking place on the second weekend in December, the Granbury Living Christmas Cards is a Lakeside Baptist Church’s FREE gift to the community, presented in partnership with the city of Granbury and Hood County. For this year schedule, click here.
Not sure how is the weather going to be this year, but back in 2016 when we watched the show, it was cold. It made the feeling of Christmas festivity in the air thicker, when we walked around town square watching the performances with hot chocolate in our hands.
Where is Granbury?
Granbury is a Texas town rich in unique culture, deep Texas history, and southern hospitality. It is located 35 miles southwest of Fort Worth, Texas.
Just like any other small towns, historic downtown Granbury is pretty with Christmas lights and decorations at this season. You can stop at one of the gift shops and antique stores all around the square to finish up your Christmas shopping. Or, eat at one of the restaurants in town before you watch the Granbury Living Christmas Cards.

I hope you will enjoy this performance like we did. See you there!

These Grandury Christmas Cards are really a HIT for me this Christmas season. I would like to have one and send it to my family. My mom would definitely like it. She loves collecting cards like this.
I love the concept of a living christmas card. It is unlike I have ever heard. It must be unique to experience this. I am sure it must bring the whole town to life and geared for christmas
Yep! It’s something that the whole town wait every other year.
Whoa! This is interesting! I’ve come across something like this in Belgium.
I’m just wondering won’t the players (actors) be tired after sometime though they get that 8 minutes break?
How long do they perform this, starting at 6:30?
It’s 2 hours but there’s a long break in the middle.
I love anything Christmas-related. This looks really wonderful and beautiful. I hope they also make living cards here in my local area.
Kudos to the Lakeside Baptist Church’s gift to the community. I am sure they made a lot of people happy. 🙂
That’s what I like about this. It’s different. We don’t just watch the parade or Christmas lights. And yeah, I’m sure a lot of people are happy with this gift from the Lakeside Baptist Church.

What a fascinating experience! The Granbury Living Christmas Cards sound like such an unsual twist on the usual nativity scenes, taking this further to include other common Christmas card scenarios. Good to know it’s only on every two years rather than annually.
You got the point. I think people will get tired if it happens every year.
Coming from an Orthdox Christian country, I’m not really used to this kinds of celebration for Christmas but it seems really interesting. It would be lovely to watch the 8 cards stage play at the Town square. It seems like an interesting tradition and a cute variation on the Christmas play. Thank you for sharing it with us.
I think you will enjoy it. On the other hand, I want to see the Orthodox Christian celebration, too.
It is great to celebrate Granbury Living Christmas Cards festivities and that too when the whole season is festive. It would be lovely to watch 8 cards stage play in the Town square. As these cards are hand painted then this festival is very unique to visit when I visit Texas in the second week of December.
I hope you can fit it in your trip to Texas.
What a great way to experience small town Christmas in Granbury. We have live nativity scenes but I’ve never seen a living postcard. What a cute variation on the Christmas play.
Yeah! I’ve seen live nativity, too, but personally, I think this living Christmas cards is better.
Hey, I didn’t expect you have the same celebrations for Christmas as we have in Poland. We also have spectacles with the holy family and showing the moment when Jesus was born. It’s a nice tradition to keep, I think so even more glad that you shared it.
Really? I would like to experience that in the future. Yes, I agree that we need keep some of the traditions and share it with others whenever possible.
