When we visited Santa Fe for the very first time, I noticed signs of green chile cheeseburger were everywhere. Hmm… sounds inviting. After we settled in our hotel room, I flipped through the travel magazine I found in the lobby. I spotted this restaurant called Cowgirl BBQ who won the Green Chile Cheeseburger Smackdown in Santa Fe. So that’s where we headed for lunch the next day.

Address: 319 S. Guadalupe St., Santa Fe, NM 87501. Ph: 505.982.2565.

Our ordered:

  • The Mother of All Green Chile Cheeseburger.
  • Chile Cheddar Fries.
  • Ice Cream Baked Potato.

We arrived at Cowgirl BBQ 30 minutes before they open at 11.30 am. The manager came to greet us and suggested us to check out a couple of places nearby until they open time. Or, we were welcome to sit if that’s what we preferred to do. We left and checked out a couple of souvenir shops around the restaurant. I checked my watch several times to make sure we wouldn’t be late for the restaurant.

Finally, it’s 11.30 a.m. Time to go back to Cowgirl BBQ. We were starving and couldn’t wait to try their green chile cheeseburger.

When the waiter came to take our order, we told her that it was our first time there. We came from Texas and we wanted to try their green chile cheeseburger: The Mother of All Green Chile Cheeseburger. She said that’s the best pick for the first timer.

She explained to us what’s in it. The burger was a mix of all-natural beef, local buffalo, and Applewood smoked bacon served in a cheddar/green chile bun with melted brie, truffle green chile, a slice of heirloom tomato, and some hand cut truffle fries. It’s grilled to our liking. Wow! It sounded so delicious. We couldn’t wait to taste it. And it came with french fries, too.

Cowgirl BBQ Fries

She suggested us to order their Chile Cheddar Fries for the side. It’s a fresh-cut French fries topped with house spicy green chile and melted cheddar cheese. “If you like spicy food,” she added. Oh yes, we did. That way we could order 1 cheeseburger and 1 fries to share. Then we ordered grilled cheese for our son.

When our order arrived, mmm… they all looked scrumptious. And it’s not only the look. They tasted so… good; even our son’s grilled cheese!

Cowgirl BBQ Ice Cream Baked Potato

For dessert, we ordered Ice Cream Baked Potato. It’s a chocolate ice cream rolled in chocolate powder and shaped into a baked potato with whipped cream (sour cream), yellow icing (butter), and green nuts (chives) for the topping. It’s delish. Mm, mm, mm, mm, mm…

Everything we ate was to die for. You have to stop there when visiting Santa Fe. Squeeze it in your itinerary. (And we did stop again the next year we went to Santa Fe).

Cowgirl BBQ

Cowgirl BBQ opened in 1993 and has been serving up a righteous barbecue, regional American cuisine, and a lot more. They got a rave review in publications like The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Cowboys and Indians Magazine, and Outside Magazine. They also featured in Travel Chanel and Food Network. And of course, locals love to dine here. That’s how I found out about this restaurant, based on their voices in SF Reporter’s Readers’ Poll!

In the summertime, there’s a live music at the front patio and family with little children could sit on the back patio where children could play in the play area.

Note: This is my personal view. I didn’t get pay or any kind of compensation from Cowgirl BBQ.

  1. I must start by saying we are not spice lovers. So as soon as we hear “chili” we back away. When we visited one year we were told the green chilis were not hot. But we could not eat our meal! The hamburger looks tasty but I would order with no green chilies. Sad to say! But I must admit that ice cream in a baked potato is just strange!

    1. Yes, it’s sad when you go to New Mexico but you don’t like spicy food. They’re famous for their chiles. The baked potato ice cream was really delicious.

  2. Hold on, let me wipe the drool from my lip. Holy Moly does the Green Chile Cheeseburger look delicious! I think it’s great that the chile isn’t only incorporated into the meat, burger toppings but also in the bun. I think that’s a very unique twist and definitely would add more oomph to the burger. That ice cream potato nearly fooled me though! What a clever way to serve a traditional dessert. Sounds like Cowgirl BBQ is a great place to eat as a family and especially for those who want to experience some heat.

    1. We really liked their burger. We went back last summer with my family who visited from Indonesia. But not this summer as we didn’t have the right time to eat lunch in Santa Fe. 🙁

  3. Nice review on the food. Would love to check these out if I can ever get back to Texas. Thanks for sharing, looks yummy. Not sure about the baked potato ice cream, but hey, you never know til you try.

    1. You were, right! You never know until you try it. Especially when it’s homemade ice cream. Mmm…

  4. I am already drooling from your description of the cheeseburger. Truffle green chile?? That sounds super yum! That BBQ fries also looks delicious!

  5. I’m a huge fan of a good, well-crafted burger. The green chile burger sounds super tasty. Strangely, my favorite way to have a burger is a veggie burger with bacon. Haha. Do they have vegetarian patties here?

  6. That looks so good. I only eat burgers when it is properly made like this, no McDonalds but a good restaurant 😀 Cowgirl BBQ Fries looks delicious as well. Hope I get to visit this place and try it out 😀

  7. Wow the burger looks so good! If I went there I’d probably order the fries. Smothered in cheese 🙂 Classic American food that I’m missing here in Amsterdam.

  8. I love checking out kitschy places like this! Sometimes the food doesn’t quite live up to the hype, so I’m glad to hear it was all delicious. I’ll have to check it out next time I’m passing though town. I’m very curious about the ice cream baked potato!

    1. And it’s lunch time now at my place. Too bad Santa Fe is 9 hours away. Now I can only wish they’re an hour away. 🙂

    1. Yeah, you should try it! Other food at the restaurant look yummy, too. It’s just because we don’t have this burger in North Texas, so we ordered the same one when we went there the second time.
