With some information in hand and a bit of imagination, I told our son that we’re going to take him around the world in 3 days. “What?” he asked in disbelief. “No way!” he continued. “Yes way,” I said. What he didn’t know, it all took place in Texas Hill Country. Yes! Y’all read it right! Texas Hill Country. No passport needed. Unless you come from overseas.

Around the World in 3 Days

DAY 1

It was on Labor Day weekend when we traveled around the world in just 3 days. Our first stop was Easter Island, to see the famous massive carved stone head-and-torso, average 13 feet (4 meters) tall and 14 tons.

Around the world in 3 days_ first stop: Easter Island

From there we flew to England, the city of Wiltshire to be exact, to see one of the famous monuments in the world: Stonehenge.

Now that we were in Europe, we hopped on to Transylvania, a region in Romania. It’s time to see Count Dracula relatives: the bats, coming out at dusk looking for their prey.

Around the world in 3 days third stop: Transylvania.

DAY 2

On the second day of our trip around the world in 3 days, we did a time travel and transfer back to the Pacific War. We stopped in Japan, China, Korea, lots of small islands in the Pacific, Papua New Guinea, South East Asia, and of course Hawaii to watch our World War II heroes defended freedom for our nation and human beings.

Our son with Admiral Chester W. Nimitz.

While we were in the Pacific, I realized it’s already half-way to Indonesia. So, what’s better than spending time with my childhood friend and enjoying lontong sayur (soft rice with vegetable curry) that we liked to eat back when we were in high school?

DAY 3

On the last day of our adventure, we went to the local river for a relaxation. It was a nice day, the water was clean, and there weren’t other people around: a perfect time to end our around the world in 3 days adventure.

And it’s all taken place in Hill Country, Texas, just around 3,5 hours from home on the south side of Ft. Worth.

Our Driving Directions for Around the World in 3 Days

We left on Saturday morning for Germany, err… Fredericksburg, the Germantown in Texas Hill Country. Our based for the first day. As usual, we took US-67 S. Not because google map showed it as the fastest route to get to Fredericksburg from our place, but because we like the scenery along the way compare to I-35W S. Besides, there are so many roadside attractions where you can stop between Fort Worth and Fredericksburg when you take this way. We drove pass Glen Rose and turned to TX-220 S in Bluff Dale.

When we hit Hico, we stopped for a donut from Koffee Kup Family Restaurant (rating #3 in Texas Country Reporter for the best pies in Texas) and homemade chocolates from Wiseman House Chocolate. Making a stop in Hico is also our regular on the way to Fredericksburg. We like the donuts and chocolates from those places.

(If you’re looking for a hike or camping place near Hico, check out Meridian State Park.)

From Hico we turned to US-281 S. It took us through Hamilton and Evant, where we turned west to US-84 W and drove to Goldthwaite. Here, we turned to TX-16 S/N State Hwy 16 that took us all the way to Fredericksburg, passing San Saba, Llano, and Willow City. (Sometimes we didn’t turn west at Evant. We drove pass Lampasas all the way to Burnet, then turned west where we would hit Llano.)

From Fredericksburg we drove to Ingram to see the Easter Island’s stone head and Stonehenge. Both sculptures located on the campus of the Hill Country Arts Foundation, beside the Guadalupe River. Address is 120 Point Theatre Rd. S.

In the late afternoon we went to Old Tunnel State Park to watch the bat emergence from the tunnel. The park located in Fredericksburg, at 10619 Old San Antonio Road.

On Sunday we visited the National Museum of the Pacific War, also located in Fredericksburg. It’s right in the center of the activities at 340 E Main St. After spending more than 4 hours at the museum, we drove to my friend’s house in Boerne, about 45 minutes to the south, and spent a night there.

Boerne is also another Germantown in the Texas Hill Country. It’s a small town with plenty of beautiful places and activities to do. A must visit while in the area, and here are things to do in Boerne with your family when visiting in the weekend.

The next morning, on our last day adventure of around the world in 3 days, we went to Guadalupe River that passed the city for some fun in the water. Then we left for home after a delicious Indonesian vegetable curry lunch.

This time we took a slightly different way from where we came. We took US-281 N all the way to Hico. We passed Blanco, Johnson City, Marble Falls, Burnet, and Lampasas before we hit Evant. From here the route was the same until we arrived home.

(When in Lampasas, make sure you stop for sculptures in the park at Hanna Springs Sculpture Garden. It’s free. And if you like cave adventure, Longhorn Cavern in Burnet is not like your usual cave with stalactite and stalagmite. Walking in Longhorn Cavern is like walking in the underground river, without the water.)

  1. This is such a cool idea. Especially in these crazy times of not being able to leave the country or even the State for some parts of the world. I wonder how many countries I could ‘visit’ here in Australia over 3 days..?

  2. I am sure your son was amazed when you told him your would take him around the world in 3 days. So cool that you can do local trips and see things that resemble major iconic sites around the world. Although I would pass on the bat encounter! It is a great way to spark some wanderlust too and add to your travel wish list. Easter Island is definitely on our list.

  3. Hey your title is very tempting as I was very much amazed that how can you travel the world in 3 days. Visiting Texas hill country must be fun as to see different zones dedicated to different areas of the world must be interesting. This kind of trip are always very knowledgeable for small children. 1. Thank you, Yukti! Apparently Texas Hill Country has so much to offer that you just need a creativity to make it even more fun. Last weekend I found out there’s a small town with French heritage around Hill Country and people from Alsace donated an old house, shipped it here, and helped put the house together with the locals. That’s in my next visit.

  4. This is awesome that a themed park was built in order for many locals experience to visit the international attraction without needing of leaving the country. I never been to UK, maybe in the next 3years I might be able to visit it, like this famous Stonehedge. Glad your family enjoyed your 3-days trip!

    1. Well, this is not a themed park. Artists built the Stonehenge and Easter Island torso, there’s a museum, a tunnel, a city, and I created it as a traveling around the world in 3 days for our son.

  5. Your son is on his way to becoming a jet setter! That’s such a fun 3-day itinerary and I actually have a family friend who would like to do a trip around that area, so I’m definitely going to share this post! Thank you for the guide!

  6. I can imagine your son’s reaction when you told him that you’d go around the world in 3 days. He must be thinking that if a trip around town can take more than half a day, it would surely take more than 3 days if it’s around the world. But, yes way indeed! That’s one creative way of traveling around the world. I think it’s brilliant for Texas Hill Country too to bring the World closer to the community. I guess it must be tiring to go around the world in 3 days but your son looks like he enjoyed it.

    1. Haha… Yes, he enjoyed it very much! Now is to arrange to visit them in their original places. 🙂

  7. Such a cool way to take your son around the world and introduce him to some history!! I didn’t know Hill Country had so much to see and experience. Looks like you had a great time. 😀

  10. I had forgotten all about these treasures in the Hill Country! I’ve been to Stonehenge and the Easter Islands but hadn’t really thought of them as a tour of the world in Texas. I think it’s great to explore nearby and show our kids that there is adventure everywhere.

    1. Yep! There’s always adventure near where we live. It’s how we see and work it out for the kids.

  13. Hahaha! You almost got me. We also have a similar place like that in Cebu, only that it focuses on Holland. But oh, yes—Easter Islands. That is one of our dream destinations after seeing the documentary 180 Degrees South.

    1. He said, “Great job, mommy! Though it’s only in Texas.” Haha.. He’s so exciting that we’re going to celebrate Christmas with family in Pittsburgh.

  14. Funnnnnn!!!!!! At first I thought I read wrong and kept re-reading it over and over again thinking how the heck can anyone go around the world in such a short amount of time hahaa. I visited London couple years back and wanted to make a stopover to the Stonehenge but never got a chance so this is definitely giving me the travel bugs. These are some great itinerary suggestions by the way! If I had kids, this would for sure be the way I’d bring them “around the world” 😉

    1. Haha! Lots of my friends thought the same, too. They thought we went to Easter Island and they were like “WOW!” My friend in Holland asked me to stop by at her place when we were looking at “Stonehenge”. It was a fun way to bring the kids on their around the world adventure.

  15. What a great way to see monuments from around the world without traveling too far! I’ve always felt that exploring our own backyards is so underrated. Sounds like a wonderful 3 days!

    1. I agree with you. A lot of people think that exploring our own backyard is not fun. I think they just don’t know how to make it fun.

  16. Cool idea! For a while there I thought you had a private jet or something.. LOL.. What a fun way of seeing the world and in just 3 days indeed! I’ve read about the Stonehenge II and Easter Island in the Texas Hill Country.. Such a cool way to visit incredible sites like this near you! 🙂
