A visit to Casey, Illinois, the Home of the World’s Largest, is a must for anyone looking for roadside attractions. In this small town, you will not only see one but fourteen of the world’s largest. Not to mention another ten or more big things that will make your trip to this small town more memorable than you had anticipated!
The first time I heard of Casey Illinois was from a booklet I picked up at the Illinois Visitor Center. The front of it caught my eye since there was a picture of The World’s Largest Rocking Chair. Maybe someday, I thought to myself, we’ll make a pit stop here on our journey. And it occurred over the holiday season last year as we traveled from a city in southern Illinois to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The GPS directed us via Casey. Yay!
A Stop at Casey, Illinois, the Home of the World’s Largest
Where is Casey, Illinois?
Casey is a small town in East Central Illinois. It is a great stop for travelers as it is located on I-70 halfway between St. Louis, Missouri, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Particularly for people like us who chase roadside attractions.
Casey has a population of fewer than 3,000 people, and we visited on a Sunday morning. As a result, the street was fairly quiet. All of the shops in the town square were still closed, and our car was the only one there.
Welcome to The Home of the World’s Largest
After traveling for nearly 1-1/2 hours and being bombarded with The World’s Largest Rocking Chair billboards on the highway, we took exit 129 to Casey, which was listed on the billboards. We didn’t see any additional signage pointing in the right direction following the turn, though. Or maybe we somehow missed it?
“What brings us here? Simply return to the highway,” our son murmured from the rear seat. He’s almost a teenager, dislikes being in pictures, and doesn’t care about something like this. You might now grin if you reflect on your youth. My husband stated, “Mommy wants to visit The World’s Largest Rocking Chair.” Haha…
Anyway, the first big thing we noticed in Casey wasn’t the rocking chair, but a wooden token in front of a bank. It is close to the highway and is adjacent to a McDonald’s on the left side of the street. However, we didn’t stop. My husband had already driven past the bank when we recognized what that was. I guess. I said to my husband, “We can stop there on the way back.” Address: 936 Illinois Route 49. Outside the Casey State Bank branch.
My husband noticed a sign for The World’s Largest Wind Chime as we carried on down Route 49. Wait! What? We came for the rocking chair, and all of a sudden we see a wind chime. It’s getting fascinating, I think.
Half a mile later, continuing on Route 49, we came across a Giant Antler in front of a heavy equipment store. Undoubtedly, we had to stop. Snoopy, our traveling dog, also needed to use the restroom. Address: 905 North Route 49.
As we continued to move in the direction of the city square, we noticed a large yardstick on the right side. I don’t remember its name, but it’s in the front yard of several businesses. I noticed the top of the rocking chair a block distance to the east while we were taking pictures. Woohoo! The largest rocking chair in the world is approaching! Address: 101 North Central Street.
We could see The World’s Largest Key by Kendall Motor Oil, a downtown garage, just a few steps away. This is the newest World Record in town, standing at 26 feet tall. Address: 4 W Alabama Avenue.
The World’s Largest Rocking Chair and The World’s Largest Wind Chime
When we arrived at the next traffic light, I later learned that it was the only one in the entire town. The World’s Largest Rocking Chair was on the corner when we turned left into East Main Street. It’s gigantic! The focal point of the attraction. You won’t miss it.
The big rocking chair we saw in Fanning, Missouri sprang to mind when I saw it. a tiny village close to Cuba, where the former US Route 66 crosses the town. I wonder if this rocking chair is the same size as the one in Fanning, bigger, or smaller. I discovered that the one in Casey now holds the new record when I googled it. It stands 56 feet tall and weighs 46,200 pounds. Address: 117 East Main Street.
Across from the largest rocking chair in the world sits the largest wind chime. It is 56 feet tall, the same height as The Rocking Chair, and the longest chime is 42 feet long. The city’s initial attempt to make the record books was with the Wind Chime. In the Wind Chime complex, there is a Big Thing In A Small Town Workshop, however, it is closed on Sundays. This is the place to go for ‘bigger’ information about the World’s Largest City. Address: 109 East Main Street.
Across the Wind Chime is The World’s Largest Teeter Totter, but we only saw it from across the street. It was closed. The Big Ear of Corn is also situated at the intersection where we made the turn onto East Main Street. Address: 2 East Main Street.
In this location, we also observed a sign pole with arrows pointing to the largest golf tee and pitchfork in the world, as well as the largest wooden shoe, largest mailbox, largest knitting needles, and a largest crochet hook. Unreal, huh?
We decided to first visit the Golf Tee and the Pitchfork before returning to the town square to check the remaining World’s Largest.
The World’s Largest Golf Tee and The World’s Largest Pitchfork
As we drove down East Main Street looking for signs to the Golf Tee, we noticed The Big Bookworm in front of the library. It is on the right-hand side. Address: 307 East Main Street.
We almost reached the end of East Main Street, but we still couldn’t locate the signs for the pitchfork and golf tee. There is a problem here. They weren’t supposed to be outside the city borders, we believed. After turning back and moving more slowly, I eventually spotted the sign. We missed it since it was hidden by a road work sign where we had come from.
On NE 13th St., a few minute’s drive from the wind chime, are the golf tee and the pitchfork. The public golf course at 203 NE 13th St. has the largest golf tee in the world behind the clubhouse.
From there, we continued driving for a short while to reach The World’s Largest Pitchfork, which is located next to Richards Farm Restaurant at 607 NE 13th St. Even though I’ve heard it’s one of the greatest in town, eating there is not required in order to snap photos.
Our son at this point had zero interest in getting out of the car. Fortunately, Snoopy is still around even if he always refuses to grin for the camera. Haha.
More Surprises Awaiting Us in Casey Illinois, The Home of the World’s Largest
We returned to the town square and parked by The World’s Largest Barbershop Pole on the west side. As soon as we turned onto East Main St., I noticed the pole of this barbershop. It stands in front of Tina’s Barbershop and is 15 feet tall.
And when we parked the car, what did we see? A large pencil! A yellow No. 2 pencil, that is for sure. Address: 8 West Main Street.
We passed The World’s Largest Mailbox across the street, but we chose to walk to the end of the block first. There must be something at the corner, I had a feeling. Well, I was correct. There stood The Big Bird Cage waiting for us. I went inside and played a round of birdies with Snoopy. Address: 26 West Main Street.
I noticed a large minion in the distance as we crossed the street, but we opted against going there. I had anticipated that we would stop for five to ten minutes, but we have already been in this small town for more than an hour. It meant that we would arrive at our destination after nightfall.
The World’s Largest Mailbox
The World’s Largest Mailbox measures 5,743.41 cubic feet. Visitors can climb the mailbox pole’s internal staircase to the top for a panoramic view of Main Street. Don’t forget to bring your letter or postcard with you when you visit and leave it here. When you throw them away, a warning sign will appear. Yes, this mailbox is operational. To claim the title of The World’s Largest Mailbox, they had to proceed in this way. Epic, yes? Address: 19 West Main Street.
It’s a shame Snoopy couldn’t accompany me to the summit. He’s terrified of the metal grate, which is what the stairs are made of.
The World’s Largest Wooden Shoes/Clog is located behind the mailbox. The Casey’s Candy Depot, where it is housed, was unfortunately still closed when we arrived. However, I could see it out the window. Address: 20 West General Robey St.
I then made my way back to the intersection in search of the largest knitting needles and crochet hook in the world. Though I was unable to locate it, I was able to locate The Big Mousetrap and The Big Spinning Top (18 South Central Avenue). At the intersection of East Main Street and South Central Avenue, the mousetrap is located directly behind the first building. You won’t miss it. It’s large
Without having seen The World’s Largest Knitting Needles and Crochet Hook, which are housed in The Yarn Studio on 2 East Main Street, we departed Casey thirty minutes later. It’s incredible to see all the world’s largest and big things in a town the size of Casey. We’re curious who’s behind all of this. He/she came up with a wonderful idea to attract tourists to their community.
Jim Bolin, the man behind The World’s Largest
When I returned from vacation, I googled Casey Illinois to learn more about the creator of the World’s Largest. It’s Jim Bolin, a local businessman who was born and raised in Casey.
Everything began with the enormous wind chime he created in 2011 to promote his wife’s tea shop. To visit the wind chime and shop, many people exited the freeway. And after realizing the benefits it offers the neighborhood, he began to consider creating further infrastructure for the municipality.
This resulted in the largest pitchfork, wooden shoes, golf tee, and other objects that are presently present in the town, largely concentrated along Main Street.
Thousands of tourists pass by today to view all the Big Things in Casey and take advantage of the town’s eateries, boutiques, and other small businesses for shopping and dining.
When coming in the summer, I estimate that you will require at least 3 hours. There will be many people and it will be more difficult to find parking near Main Street.
Other Largest or Big Things that We Didn’t Get to See
- The World’s Largest Golf Drive
- The World’s Largest Swizzle Spoon (Brownie’s Place, 111 S Central Avenue)
- The World’s Largest Gavel (it was crafted by the same people in Casey, but they put it in front of the Courthouse in Marshall, about 20 minutes from Casey)
- The Big Rocking Horse (on the porch of JJET Rental at 905 Illinois Route 49)
- The Big Toy Glider (inside the Casey Municipal Airport at 101 Airport Road)
Distance from a nearest bigger city
- Casey – Chicago: 3.5 hours
- Casey – Champaign: 1.5 hours
- Casey – Indianapolis, Indiana: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Casey – St. Louis, Missouri: 2 hours
Even while we enjoy seeking out quirky roadside things while traveling, we’ve never made a special journey just for it. Every time we came across a sign, we pulled over. Similar to Casey, Illinois, the location of the largest objects in the world.
Are you familiar with Casey? Did you see the entire thing or just a portion of it? Please let me know by writing a comment below.
For your information, the rocking chair was the only large object we were aware of before our visit. We discovered others while we were there.
You always find such interesting small towns, Umiko! I’m surprised having grown up in the Midwest that I’ve never heard of Casey before. The windchime looks especially interesting! I also love your photos with the snow!
I think one of the advantages of road tripping is to find unique things in small towns by looking at thousands of billboards on the highway. Haha..
So cool to have so many huge things in such a small area! The key and mailbox are great but I bet my kids would prefer the antlers and rocking chair!
A smart way to attract tourists to your small town. My husband and son also like the antler while I like the mailbox and the birdcage.
This place looks HUGELY fun haha It looks like a fun area to practice your photography skills!
You’re right. Not just because they are huge, but too many distractions around them. Haha…
This is such a fun area to stop by on a road trip. Not only is if fun for kids but for adults too! I don’t know why, but I really like the mail box 🙂 Too bad snoopy couldn’t go inside it tho!
Yeah. He’s afraid of metal grate. It wouldn’t be a problem if it’s wood.
I kept thinking…I think Umiko must have messed up cause I have no idea what is the World’s Largest in Casey, Illinois! That is until I found out that Casey, Illinois is the World’s Largest EVERYTHING! haha. But seriously, how fun is this place. I love it when a small town or city develops a quirky yet fun personality! Hands down Jim Bolin must have had the World’s Largest Personality!
Haha… we’re with you. This Mr. Jim Bolin really knows how to attract tourists to come to their town.
This place sounds so cool, my kids would love it! Definitely makes for some cool photo ops!
This is an interesting concept. It just goes to prove that coastal dwellers should not ignore the middle of the country!
So true! Haha..
I LOVE a “world’s largest”- they just make me smile!! I’d totally go here!!
It was a fun visit!
We visited this past summer on a road trip. I had heard about Casey from an Instagram post and looked it up and saw it was right off the highway we would be driving. While we only stopped for 15 minutes, the whole family had fun laughing at the World’s Largest items. Our favorites were the rocking chair and mailbox.
It is unbelievable! We’re like, what?, after seeing largest things one after another. Haha..
I didn’t that Illinois has a handful of larges things. It’s really amazing!Well the largest rocking chair it would look better though if the snowman isn’t there underneath. It’s kinda ruining the view for me..
We were visiting just a couple of days before Christmas. Haha…
First I wondered what ‘world’s largest’ but then I realized there are too many things. I like this trip where ‘Mommy wanted to see The World’s Largest Rocking Chair.’ Giant Antler looks too cute. I would love to visit a quirky place like this.
I think mommy still rules. Haha…
I have an almost teenager too and I can see her not getting excited about this at first either 😄 What an interesting place, though. The perfect kind of place for a day trip.
Teenagers. Haha… But yes, a perfect place for a day trip.
Ha! At first, I thought your title was missing something, lol! But obviously, there is a LOT of world’s largest right there. So interesting. My husband would totally love the golf tee, but I think that the mailbox is pretty cool. What a fun place to go!
I like the Mailbox, too. It’s cool that visitors can climb inside it. If only we can climb the Rocking Chair, too. It would be fun.
That place looks to cool, I would love to visit. I love to visit quirky little places and I can’t believe how many things there are to see there. I want to see it all, but I especially want to see the Rocking Horse, Rocking chair and the key.
I couldn’t believe my eyes, too. My town is bigger but we are nothing compare to Casey. Jim Bolin is really smart.
A giant rocking chair, wind chime, antlers, yard stick, car key, golf tee, etc are hilarious. Roadside attractions are so much fun. It’s really interesting to see what attraction cities decide to offer. OMG, your boys sound like ours did at that age. We haven’t done many road trips but one that featured roadside attractions would be fun for all ages.
Yeah. Roadside attractions are fun for all ages. It makes a fun surprise to your itinerary.
The small place has some of the biggest art pieces which makes it attractive to the outside. This is a good activity for the families with kids as well. Not only adults but also kids can have fun with those arts.
For sure.
It is a pity that I did not read this article a few weeks ago when we passed through Illinois during our road trip. I haven’t heard of Casey before. Now I know I’ll be back there for sure. Pictures with large objects have an interesting perspective. And because we love photography, I would like to take a picture of this big key, chair and above all the fork. They look great.
I’m sure you will go through Illinois again, and most of all, you will make beautiful pictures.
What a fascinating place based on this idea of creating a collection of the world’s largest things! Love the eccentricity of this. I think the rocking chair, antlers and wind chimes would be my to three!
Casey definitely looks like a great spot on a road trip through Illinois. We would definitely want to take pics with as many of the “Worlds Largest …” as we could. The rocking chair is a great draw. Too bad you can’t actually sit on it. I loved the variety in the things they have selected to have in such big sizes.
Isn’t it crazy? And I agree, they chose the things carefully that people will like and still represent the town’s character.
Ok, if I am driving by this area, I want to check it out. I have only done two places similar to this, Moose Jaw in Canada which has the world’s largest moose and Medicine Hat in Canada which has the world’s largest First Nations tent. I love the mailbox and I can’t believe it is fully functional! This town is crazy, a tourist magnet but it has to be checked out 🙂
Yeah. It’s worth the turn from the highway.
