Parks Hopping In The West Itinerary

Here is the itinerary of our parks hopping in the west from summer of 2015. This time part of our parks hopping was with a family friend and the last 3 days of the trip we didn’t do any reservations at all. No planned itinerary.

Our Itinerary

Day 1: Home (North Texas) to Albuquerque, New Mexico (about 9 h 30 m).

Places Visited:

  • Tinkertown Museum.
  • Sandia Peak.

Entrance Fee:

  • Tinkertown Museum: Adults (Ages 18-62): $3.75; Geezers (62+): $3.25; Kids 4-18: $1.25;
    Kids Under 4: Free.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • Lots of hotels and restaurant to choose in Albuquerque that matched your budget.

 

Day 2: Albuquerque, NM.

Places Visited:

  • Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, Cochiti Pueblo.
  • Turquoise Trail, a scenic route that was connected Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

Entrance Fee:

  • Free with National Park Pass; or $5 – private vehicles, group pass up to 25 individuals $25, 25-100 individuals $100.

Meals:

  • Stop at Cowgirl BBQ for their Mother of Green Chile Cheeseburger.

 

Day 3: Albuquerque, NM to Moab, Utah (about 6 h).

Places Visited:

  • Wilson Arch.
  • Arches National Park.

Entrance Fee:

  • Wilson Arch is free.
  • Arches NP: Free with National Park Pass; or $25 – private vehicle, $15 – motorcycle, $10 – individual on bicycle or foot. Good for 7 days.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • We rent a condo and cooked our own meals.
  • Lots of hotels/condo/campground and restaurants that match your budget around Moab.

 

Day 4: Moab, Utah

Places Visited:

  • Arches NP.
  • Hole N” The Rock.
  • Canyonlands NP.

Entrance Fee:

  • Hole N” The Rock: Adult – $6, Children (5-10) – $3.50, Under 5 Free.
  • Canyonlands NP: Free with National Park Pass; or $25 – private vehicle, $15 – motorcycle, $10 – individual on foot or bicycle.

 

Day 5: Moab to Salt Lake City, Utah (about 4 h).

Place Visited:

  • Antelope Island State Park.

Entrance Fee:

  • $10 per vehicle up to 8 people.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • Lots of hotels and restaurants in Salt Lake City that match your budget.

 

Day 6: Salt Lake City to Logan, Utah (about 1.5 h).

Place Visited:

  • Temple Square.

Entrance Fee:

  • Free.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • We stayed at our friend’s house in Logan and ate at local restaurants.

 

Day 7: Logan, Utah.

Place Visited:

  • Tony Grove Lake.

Entrance Fee:

  • Free.

 

Day 8: Logan, Utah to Ashton, Idaho (about 3 h).

Place Visited:

  • Yellowstone National Park.

Entrance Fee:

  • Free with National Park Pass; or $30 – private vehicle, $25 – motorcycle/snowmobile, $15 – individual on foot, bicycle, ski, etc. Good for 7 days.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • We stayed in Ashton, Idaho because of late booking. Packed our lunch because we’re not sure where we would be around lunch time.

 

Day 9: Explored Yellowstone NP.

 

Day 10: Ashton, Idaho to Rock Springs, Wyoming (about 5 hours).

Places Visited:

  • Yellowstone NP, WY.
  • Grand Teton NP, WY.
  • Jackson Hole, WY.

Entrance Fee:

  • Grand Teton NP: Free with National Park Pass; or $30 – private vehicle, $25 – motorcycle, $15 – individual on foot, bicycle, ski, etc. Good for 7 days.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • Roadside hotels and restaurants to choose that match your budget.

 

Day 11 – Rock Springs, WY to Delta, CO (about 5 h 30 m).

Places Visited:

  • Flaming Gorge Dam, Utah. Tour the dam.
  • Dinosaur National Monument, Vernal, Utah.

Entrance Fee:

  • Flaming Gorge Dam is free.
  • Dinosaur NM in Vernal, Utah: Free with National Park Pass; or $20 – private vehicle, $15 – motorcycle, $10 – individual on foot or bicycle. Good for 7 days.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • We stayed in Delta, CO. This was the first day of our no reservations trip.

 

Day 12 – Delta to Alamosa, CO (about 4 h).

Place Visited:

  • Gunnison of the Black Canyon National Park.

Entrance Fee:

  • Free with National Park Pass; or $15/day/vehicle or motorcycle, $7/person-pedestrian/cyclist, 16 & under free.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • Choices of hotels and restaurants in Alamosa, CO.

 

Day 13: Alamosa, CO to Capulin, NM (about 2 h 30 m).

Places Visited:

  • Great Sand Dune National Park & Preserve, Alamosa.
  • Red River, NM.
  • Cimarron, NM.

Entrance Fee:

  • Free with National Park Pass; or $15/private vehicle, $10/motorcycle, $7/over sized vehicle with 15+ passengers, ages 16+.

Accommodation & Meals:

  • Lots of restaurant along the way and we pitched a tent at Capulin RV Park.

 

Day 14: Capulin, NM to home in North TX (about 8 h).

Place Visited:

  • Capulin Volcano National Monument.

Entrance Fee:

  • Free with National Park Pass; or $7/vehicle for 7 days.

 

General tip:

  • We bought National Park pass for the trip that was also good for National Monument (cost $80).
  • Booked hotels in advance, especially for Yellowstone NP.
  • Found information online, from magazines, and friends who’d been to those places or live around the area.
